Space Data, Funding Opportunities, and New Milestones: Highlights from February’s Network & Drinks

February edition of Network & Drinks focused on the practical use of space data, showcasing how different industries can benefit from satellite technology. The evening covered topics ranging from precise geolocation and real-time monitoring to AI-driven data applications. Attendees also received key updates from NL Space Campus and SBIC Noordwijk. 

Updates from NL Space Campus

New Space Simulation Chamber

Stellar Space Industries, in collaboration with Provincie Zuid-Holland and NL Space Campus, announced plans for a Space Simulation Chamber at NL Space Campus in Noordwijk. This facility will make environmental testing for space systems more accessible, reducing reliance on foreign test sites and enabling faster prototyping. It will support thermal vacuum cycling, vacuum outgassing, and other critical space-related tests. The chamber is expected to be ready for use by the end of 2025.  

Launch of ESA Phi-Lab Netherlands

ESA, NL Space Campus, and SBIC Noordwijk have officially launched ESA Phi-Lab Netherlands to advance research into transformative space technologies with commercial potential. The initiative aims to strengthen collaborations between research institutions and industry. A permanently open call for project applications is now available at esaphilab.nl, with the first selection round closing on 31 March 2025. 

NL Space Summer School 6-11 July 2025 Applications Open

Applications are now open for the NL Space Summer School 2025, a six-day programme running from 6–11 July 2025. The programme is designed for students, studying at an EU institute, and young professionals looking to explore the Dutch space industry and broaden their knowledge of the potential in the space sector. No prior experience or knowledge about space is necessary. After meeting the requirements, admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Launch of the NL Space Campus Voucher Arrangement

A new Voucher Arrangement was introduced, supported by Kansen voor West and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This initiative provides financial support for startups, offering subsidies to help develop their business ideas and establish operations at NL Space Campus. 

Upcoming Tech Needs Discovery Event 18 March

On 18 March 2025, SBIC Noordwijk will host the first Tech Needs Discovery event of the year, connecting space innovators with non-space industries. The event will focus on technology applications in High Tech, Agri-Food, Logistics, and Energy sectors, fostering cross-industry collaboration.

New Community Members

SBIC welcomed Gravity Gardens, an agri-tech startup working on vertical farming solutions inspired by planetary environments, along with two new individual members. 

ESA BIC Noordwijk Applications Open

Startups can now apply for the ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Noordwijk. The next application deadline is 6 March 2025. ESA BIC supports entrepreneurs leveraging space technology and data in their business ventures. 

New Masterclass on Customer Development

A Customer Development Masterclass is scheduled for 27 March 2025, providing insights into market validation and user engagement strategies. Details will be announced soon. 

Co-working and Office Space Available

SBIC Noordwijk now offers flexible co-working and office spaces. Entrepreneurs can book a desk for a day or reserve a meeting room via this link. 

Introducing Uncover Space Podcast

The first episode of Uncover Space, a podcast by NL Space Campus and SBIC Noordwijk, is now available. This 22-minute episode covers space community updates, insights into ESA Phi-Lab Netherlands, and a fun space fact. Featuring Maaike Smelter (NL Space Campus), Martijn Leinweber (SBIC Noordwijk), and Pedro Lacerda (ESA Phi-Lab NL), the podcast is produced by Amelie Finan (SBIC Noordwijk). The next podcast will host Philippe Schoonejans, former ESA researcher working on explorations missions to ISS, the Moon and Mars.  

Startup Pitches

Vydar

A Dutch team that placed second in the European final of the CASSINI Hackathon presented their approach to drone geolocation in GPS-denied environments. Their solution integrates satellite imagery and AI to improve positioning accuracy, with applications in security and logistics. 

SatInsight

SatInsight – dotSPACE introduced the Sat-Insight Tech Hub, an initiative supported by Provincie Zuid-Holland to improve access to satellite data and AI applications. The hub aims to enhance industry connections and expand training opportunities. 

OpenAtlas

OpenAtlas showcased their platform that uses satellite imagery and AI to help businesses comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Their technology enables real-time monitoring of deforestation risks to support sustainable supply chain management. OpenAtlas is also part of the ESA Business Accelerator.

The March edition of Network & Drinks will be a special event held at the ZIE Conference in the Van Nelle Factory, Rotterdam, in collaboration with Hi Delta. This gathering, scheduled for 27 March, will feature the Synergy Award presentation, followed by a pitch from the winner, alongside presentations from RISE student team and Aardvark Sensing.
