SRON Open Day – 5 & 6 October

October 5, 2024
- October 6, 2024

Will you also step into the world of Space Research this October with SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research? We are hosting fun open days again. On Saturday, October 5th at SRON in Leiden, and on Sunday, October 6th at SRON, Kapteyn Institute, and NOVA in Groningen. Mark these dates in your calendar!

What do we do?

With space telescopes, we look up at stars, planets, and black holes. This helps us learn how they work. We also look down from above, at the atmosphere of our own planet Earth. This way, we can observe what is happening with the climate. We make these telescopes at SRON, together with researchers from other countries.

What can our telescopes do?

They can capture light that cannot be adequately captured from the Earth. The mixture of air and clouds around the Earth gets in the way.
It usually involves special types of light that our eyes cannot see well. For example, X-ray light, which doctors use to take pictures of your bones or teeth. Or infrared light, which is very good for seeing warm and cold on Earth.

Some space telescopes take wide-angle or detailed pictures. There are also telescopes that can read fingerprints in the light. These reveal how warm the cosmic dust in the universe is, where it is moving, and whether it is clumping together or exploding.

What will you learn on the open day?

During the open day, we will show you how we conduct our research and how we design, test, and improve new sensitive telescopes on Earth, making them suitable for use in space.

We conduct experiments, give demonstrations, and offer interesting lectures. Visitors of all ages can learn a lot. What do you look like through a thermal camera? Is there (any) life on other planets? How do you track greenhouse gases moving through our atmosphere? Come and find out in Leiden and/or Groningen.
