Next week the Royal couple visits the Duin- en Bollenstreek and NL Space Campus

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima will visit the Duin- en Bollenstreek on Thursday 7 April. This region is characterised by its versatility and contrasts, which will be the main focus of the visit. We feel honored that the royal couplewill visit NL Space Campus on their regional visit.

They will start their visit at Lisse (highest amount of amateur football), Teylingen (bulb cultivation), Hillegom (bulb field tourism), Katwijk (strengthen tourist network) and end in Noordwijk. At the Space Business Innovation Centre on NL Space Campus, they will meet start-ups working on applications of knowledge and technology from space in other sectors, such as agriculture, security, climate and healthcare. In addition, a discussion will take place, on how the development of the campus can be further stimulated, how the space cluster can strengthen itself and how NL Space Campus can contribute to this. Representatives from space partners in the region, including ESA/ESTEC, LDE universities, TU Delft, TNO, GNSS CoE and NL Space Campus, are joining the discussion. This visit is organised by the province of Zuid-Holland, and the Commissaris van de Koning and the mayor of Noordwijk are also present and joining the discussion. The regional visit is concluded on campus with the various participants and representatives of the total regional visit.

Press release:

There are over 190,000 people living in five municipalities: Lisse, Teylingen, Hillegom, Katwijk and Noordwijk… It is a region of contrasts, where there are traditional companies but also innovative businesses and sectors. Residents are proud of the region and at the same time attached to their own village and the community within it. The rural character goes hand in hand with economic pillars and icons of worldwide renown, such as the Keukenhof and the space cluster.

Lisse: The Royal Couple will be received by the Queen’s Commissioner, Jaap Smit, at the FC Lisse football club. No fewer than seven clubs from the region play at the highest level of amateur football; nowhere else in the Netherlands is that number so high. Residents of the various municipalities are proud of this and the clubs symbolise the communities within the region. The chairmen of various football clubs talk about the sense of identity of the clubs. The visit was followed by a discussion with the five mayors about administrative developments and cooperation between the municipalities, for example in the field of regional economy.

Teylingen: The theme of the visit to Teylingen will be bulb cultivation. After a guided tour of a grower’s company that includes a forcing unit and cultivation in the fields, a discussion will take place with representatives of bulb cultivation. The sector is a global player, but at the same time faces challenges to maintain and strengthen its position. Within the partnership Greenport Duin- en Bollenstreek, the entrepreneurs are working on modernisation, innovations and new earning models, among others through cooperation with universities.

Hillegom: In Hillegom, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit an entrepreneur who is cleverly combining the bulb fields with tourism. A special tulip field has been laid out, with a footpath and photogenic objects. Tourists can come here to take photos, which prevents the regular tulip fields from being overloaded.

Katwijk: The Royal Couple will be received in Katwijk at the unique car park built under the dunes. They will have a brief word with the presidents of the four Oranje associations in the coastal town. After they will visit a beach hut and talk about tourism in a beach pavilion with representatives of the sector from the entire region. Together, they are working on a strong tourist network. This should ensure that tourists visit several highlights of the region during their visit: from the coast, the bulb fields and the Kagerplassen, to Space Expo in Noordwijk and historic cities in the area.

Noordwijk: In Noordwijk, the Royal Couple will visit the site where the NL Space Campus is further being developed. Here they will meet start-ups working on applications of knowledge and technology from space in other sectors, such as agriculture, security and healthcare. Finally, a discussion will take place with representatives from partners of NL Space Campus in the region, on how the development of the campus can be further stimulated, how the space cluster can strengthen itself and how NL Space Campus can contribute to this.
